Should Guns Help The Victims Of Crime Or Deter Crime

In the American criminal justice system, guns have always been a hot topic. The argument on whether guns help the victims of crime or deter crime is ongoing. There is plenty of research that illustrates a strong argument that guns have virtually no effect on crime. The second amendment and American history is a leading cause for an individual to want to own a gun. Guns, Crime, and Past Research A study was done in 1993 by Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz. A self-survey of civilian defensive gun use was conducted. â€Å"In 1993, Kleck began publicizing the estimate that civilians use guns in self-defense against offenders up to 2.5 million times each year.† Hemenway showed there were several flaws in the surveying Kleck did. He stated, â€Å"There are no published data on the number of defensive gun uses in burglary. The best that can be done is to estimate the number of opportunities for victim gun use† (Kleck, 1988). In the case of burglary the National Crime Survey (NCS) states that is only around 12%. It is hard to say how prevalent a roll guns are in deterring crimes like burglary when not much is known about the nature of a large percentage of offences. Something positive Kl eck did find â€Å"When victims use guns to resist crimes, the crimes usually are disrupted and the victims are not injured† (Kleck, 1988). This meant that even if a victim is weaker or smaller the moment a gun is presented they tend to gain the upper hand and deter the attacker from further attacking. In 1993 Kleck and Patterson, made a new publication called The Impact of Gun Control and Gun Ownership Levels on Violence Rates in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology. This publication reviewed the various effects there could be in which gun availability could affect violent crime rates. They stated, â€Å"If a gun is available, it could encourage attacks, especially by weaker attackers on stronger victims, and could facilitate attacks from a distance or attacks by persons too squeamish to attack with messier weapons such as knives or too timid to attack at close quarters.
